A minimum of 11 of the meteorological balloons, transporting 18,000 packages of illegal cigarettes, have been collected so far

Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.

Flight Disruptions

The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.

Law Enforcement Actions

Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.

As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.

A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.

Cross-Border Contraband Trend

Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."

To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.

Cross-Border Effects

Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.

Criminal Methodology

Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."

Border Protection Aims

Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."

European Tensions

The recent incidents occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.

Parallel situations in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
