Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Each time a major awards ceremony nears, one notices an outcry for the addition of new categories to recognize unsung work and delight the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge game development, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
