Pat Cummins Set to Play a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on November 21 in the WACA.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and various factors involved, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally from the opening match. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
