McDonald's has taken down a holiday advertisement made with Artificial Intelligence after encountering significant online backlash.
The short film was developed via generative AI clips and was initially uploaded publicly for McDonald's Netherlands back on 6 December.
Social Media Reaction and Decision to Pull
Soon after it aired, commenters lambasted the use of AI in the commercial. Several described it as "creepy" and "poorly edited".
"This experience is an key lesson as we examine the proper utilization of Artificial Intelligence," stated a representative from the company.
The commercial was developed for the brand by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and American firm The Sweetshop. It portrayed a series of scenarios that often go badly during the Christmas break, under the theme "not the most wonderful time of the year".
A Growing Phenomenon of AI-Generated Ads
Campaigns that feature AI-created content have emerged as a increasing trend among major corporations, notably for the holiday season.
- Coca-Cola has recently launched back-to-back AI-created holiday commercials.
- Inherent Limitations: Because videos produced with generative AI are susceptible to distort the more extended they are, the majority of AI video outputs tend to be about six to 10 seconds in length.
- Industry Concerns: The video also sparked worries about job displacement in the creative industry, with some critics stating it could reduce opportunities for production staff.
Defense from the Production Company
Following the commercial being pulled, a producer's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, defended the project.
According to her, the production process required "seven weeks" and involved creating "numerous versions" which were then shaped in post-production "just as we would on any traditional production".
"This was not an AI gimmick," she commented. "It was a proper commercial."
Divisive Public Reception
While the Dutch McDonald's commercial was predominantly criticized, the reception for some AI-assisted holiday ads has been more mixed.
For instance, a recent AI-created holiday spot from another major brand reportedly garnered a significant "favorable response" from online commenters.
However, several companies have likewise encountered scrutiny for using AI in marketing. Luxury fashion house Valentino, for example, was criticized for advertisements that some called "low-effort" and "disturbing".
The episode highlights the evolving discussion within the marketing and creative industries about the balance between AI efficiency and creative integrity.
