The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
